“Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.” -Judith Thurman
I have a few friends who like me are always craving an adventure, even if it means a simple weekend getaway. Last August, we decided to drive out West, and man did we ever stumble upon something great.
Spruce Woods consists of campsites for campers and families and Manitoba’s Spirit Sands, (dunes) for the explorers! The campground offers a range of sites and activities. As for directions, from Winnipeg: travel west on Highway 1, and Kiche Manitou is approximately 180 kilometres from Winnipeg. We got a little lost finding our way to our campsite, but our unexpected path led us to this beautiful ledge overlooking the Spruce Trees right during sunset.
By mid-afternoon the next day, we conquered steep sand hills, Devil’s Punch bowl, (the hike many set out to see) and read some history of the park. From riverbanks to wandering through mixed-grass prairies, tall trees and overlooks, Spruce Woods is a unique mixture of nature.
